01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked into a residential pocket of Tokumaru, Itabashi Ward, Aoyagi Koan has maintained its craft for over 60 years. The glass cases inside are filled with an eye-catching range of offerings, spanning time-honored rice cakes and skewered dango to colorful jo-namagashi tea sweets and original creations with a subtle Western touch.
The griddled mitarashi dango makes an easy grab-and-go choice. The dumplings are soft and fluffy, lightly charred for aroma, and generously coated in a sweet-and-savory glaze that lets the fragrance of soy sauce stand out. The counter also stocks botamochi with smooth red bean paste, reflecting simple and meticulous craftsmanship, as well as red sekihan rice, making the shop just as useful for celebratory milestones as it is for an afternoon snack.
For a glimpse of seasonal artistry, the intricately shaped jo-namagashi are hard to overlook. Their delicate floral forms and refined sweetness make them well suited as centerpieces for tea or as gifts. The shop also uses distinct ingredients across other items, from confections wrapping tender chestnuts or kumquats to comforting pumpkin manju and chilled, refreshing lemon kuzu mochi.
Treats such as "Sanrizuka," which combines sweet potato paste reminiscent of baked sweet potato with a dusting of cinnamon, showcase how Japanese and Western confectionery traditions meet. The welcoming atmosphere makes it easy to ask about individual sweets, and the availability of electronic payments like PayPay and Rakuten Pay adds practical convenience for everyday visits.
